Women of Italian Cinema

The project draws attention to the women who worked in various capacities in the Italian film industry between the post-war period until the mid-1980s, with some forays into the present.
In addition to archival sources, many of which remain to be discovered, the research gathered numerous testimonies from female professionals in the sector. These broadened the field of inquiry and provided further elements for reflection.

A beginning

Starting by making accessible to scholars and enthusiasts the archives of three female personalities who were very different in terms of life experiences and skills – the production manager Mara Blasetti, the screenwriter Suso Cecchi d’Amico and the photojournalist and documentary maker Cecilia Mangini – we tried to lay the foundations for a new narrative of the history of cinema. Our aim was to give value to the contribution that – among many other women – these gave to the creative and industrial development of the Seventh Art.

Interviews

A part of the research project has been the recovery of memory through the testimonies of women who worked or continue to work in the film industry from the 1950s to today, in a wide range of roles.
